29 March 2018

Dear Parents

Telford and Wrekin Year 3/4 football tournament
Last Friday saw our Year 3/4 football team take on the best schools in Telford and Wrekin. We were drawn in a very tough, competitive group. The first match against Muxton Primary saw the boys comfortably win 3-0. Afterwards, we played St Georges, going 1-0 up through a fantastic goal only to be pegged back for a 1-1 draw. John Fletcher went 1-0 ahead against Apley Wood and somehow had an unbelievable goal disallowed, (if only goal-line technology or VAR were in use). Apley scored 2 goals in quick succession within the last minute of the game which finished 2-1. Crudgington Primary was the last fixture – a point would have been enough to qualify for the semi-finals. Again John Fletcher went ahead, but couldn’t keep Crudgington out – losing 2-1. A fantastic experience to all of our footballers and they should be very proud of their efforts.

Mathletics
There has been a real buzz this week in Years 5 and 6 as children have striven to reach the Hall of Fame.  The total so far this week is twenty, including two new entrants, with both Year 6 classes currently sitting on this week’s Hall of Fame.  Last week, 6CW retained the KS2 trophy with another amazing combined total of 131,599 points whilst 2Y took back the EYFS/KS1 trophy.   Another five Gold certificates were awarded on Monday and the certificate totals now stand at 1523 Bronze, 294 Silver and 41 Gold.  As usual, Miss Wilkes will try and keep a check of Hall of Fame positions over the holiday, but it would be helpful if screenshots were kept as a back up by any successful children.  Remember the positions only become final at 8:00pm in the evening,  so screenshots need to be taken after this time with the ‘Previous’ tab highlighted.

Y6 Abernant Photographs
After a long editing process, the Year 6 photographs are now on display in the Y6 corridor.  Parents are welcome to pop in after school to view these – please see the Y6 teachers on the playground. It is planned to provide each child with a disc of these and many other photographs that were taken during that week at the end of the Summer Term.

Year 5/6 Cluster League
After the recent snow, it was great to get the football fixtures back on. On Monday, we had a visit from a great Hollinswood team. John Fletcher matched them in every department, but we didn’t take our chances in front of their goal and, with Hollinswood being more clinical, the boys sadly lost 4-1. This was their first defeat in the league with only one match left – thanks for all that came and supported.

Football boots
We are very thankful for a generous donation of a couple of pairs of old football boots we have received this week. With the amount of opportunities we have had this year, giving children their first experience of a competitive game, we would appreciate any unwanted football boots to be donated to school to give more children an opportunity to play.

Year 5
There is an information meeting on Wednesday 18 April at 6.30pm regarding the Residential Visit to Abernant in the Autumn Term when the children will be in Year 6. Children are welcome to attend this meeting.

School Games Mark award
On Tuesday evening, we were invited to the School Games Mark Award Ceremony to celebrate being one of seventeen primary schools in Telford and Wrekin to achieve the Gold award in 2016/17. Two of our Year 6 pupils had the honour of collecting our Gold award plaque in front of representatives from other schools in the area.

Palm Crosses
Thank you very much to Reverend Kate Cook and the local Methodist Circuit, especially Mrs Sharon Barton who works in the circuit office, for the palm crosses that all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have received today.

Year 5 visit to Enginuity
5RD had a fantastic visit to Enginuity on Tuesday for their Design and Technology workshop. The children worked really hard to design their bridges using technology to plan, cost and test their structures. They then used this to physically build their model bridges. The day ended testing their bridges for structural stability and evaluating their designs.
All the children worked incredibly hard and were a credit to our school.

Year 2 Visits
A reminder that if you wish your child to attend the Residential Visit to Edgmond Hall in June the consent form needs to be returned by Wednesday 18 April. Also, there are a number of consent forms for the visit to Chirk Castle that have not been returned.  Can we please have these when we return from the Easter break, or we may unfortunately have to cancel this visit.

Parking
Please remember to park courteously, considering our neighbours and pedestrians if you bring your child to school in a car. Also – parents’ cars should not routinely be brought onto the school site.

Headlice
There have been a number of cases of headlice during this half term.  Please can hair be checked over the Easter break and hair treated accordingly if headlice are found.

Clubs
All club forms should have been handed in by today. Slips confirming your child’s places will be sent out after Easter.

School Dinner Prices
From Monday 16 April the cost of a school dinner will increase to £2.20.  Today the children should have brought home the new menu which will run from April 2018 – March 2019.  This is a 3 week menu but the dates in the calendar only show 2 weeks. This is a printing error and new menu sheets will be circulated as soon as we receive them. However, the first week back will definitely be Week 1.

Cross Country
A wet, cold, muddy afternoon at the Town Park, saw our children embrace the conditions and take on the second race in the Telford and Wrekin Primary Cross Country series. All of our children were fantastic and they all improved on their previous positions. Two more races to go!

Staffing Update
We wish the very best of luck to Miss Grainger who will be getting married during the Easter holiday. When she returns she will be Mrs Wilkinson. Her class name will, however, remain as RG.

Poetry Competition
Please note there will be an Easter Holiday poetry competition for Y5/6 pupils. The theme is “The Family of John Fletcher” and all entries need to be in on Monday 16 April. They should be no more than 8 lines long and handed in to the class teacher. The winning entry will be used on the display being created by our Family Learning group who have been very busy making a commemorative tapestry for the school.

New Family Learning
Once the Art and Craft Family Learning finishes, we will be seeking new people to join in with a group of sessions based on gardening and garden crafts. Please keep your eyes peeled for more information after the break.

Attendance Update
Today 195 children received a sticker for 100% attendance this half term. During Easter I will be writing certificates for 83 children who have had 100% attendance since Christmas and have not been late in that time. Well done to all.

This week’s winners of the attendance awards are as follows:
A* Attendance: 1H and 1J both with 100%
Pride in Punctuality: 2B with 0 lates.
